Mechanism of Action
Trace amounts of silver ions released from NOVARON® AQ into the water enter bacterial cells, where they inhibit cellular enzyme activity, growth, and metabolism.
Performance
Relationship between silver-ion release and antibacterial performance:
Approximately 10⁵ CFU/mL of bacteria and 0.5 g of NOVARON AQ were added to 500 mL of nutrient broth diluted 1:500. Viable cell counts and silver-ion concentrations were measured after shaking at 25°C.
The results show that antibacterial performance increases as the silver-ion concentration rises.
Antibacterial Test (AQ-30B)
• Standard agar was poured into a 9 cm Petri dish and allowed to solidify. Then 0.1 mL of a 10⁶ CFU/mL bacterial suspension was added and spread evenly.
• Approximately 0.15 g of AQ-30B was placed in the center of the dish. The dish was incubated at 37°C for 24 hours, producing the result shown below:
Escherichia coli (NBRC 3972) Staphylococcus aureus (NBRC 12732)
Safety
A range of safety tests has confirmed the high safety profile of NOVARON® AQ.
AQ-37 Safety Test Results
| Safety Test Item | Test Conditions | Result |
| Acute Oral Toxicity | OECD 423, rat (LD₅₀) | >5,000 mg/kg |
| Primary Skin Irritation | OECD 404 | P.I.I.=0.0 |
| Skin Sensitization | OECD 406 (GPMT) | Negative |
Application Examples
Laundry-Water Application Example:
A mesh bag filled with 30 g of NOVARON® AQ-24 was washed together with woven polyester fabric and spin-dried in an electric washing machine. Microorganisms present on the polyester surface 3 and 12 hours after washing were cultured on standard agar medium.
Application Examples
| Household Appliances | Washing machines, air conditioners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, and air purifiers |
| Other Applications | Circulating bath systems, cooling towers, landscape water features, and water-/oil-curtain scrubbers for coating equipment |
