Bamboo-Derived Natural Antibacterial Deodorant

Shiraimatsu Shinyaku Co., Ltd.

Food has long been wrapped in bamboo sheaths or leaves, as seen in chimaki, sasa dango, and akumaki rice dumplings, to take advantage of bamboo’s preservative and antibacterial properties. Building on this traditional wisdom and the identification of its active constituents, this highly effective antibacterial agent is produced by improving the extraction process and using dry distillation.

Safety

Safety Tests on Bamboo Extract
01
Acute Oral Toxicity Test
Following oral administration of the product to male and female mice, the LD50 was greater than 2,000 mg/kg,and no abnormalities were observed.
02
Primary Skin Irritation Test
After a 24-hour patch application to the dorsal skin of rabbits, the product was classified as slightly irritating.。
03
Mutagenicity Test (Micronucleus Test)
Following a single oral administration to male mice, no increase in the frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes was observed.
04
Primary Eye Irritation Test
After the sample was applied to the ocular mucosa of rabbits, no changes were observed in the cornea, iris, or conjunctiva.

Antibacterial Effect

Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) Test Using Standard Agar Medium

The polyphenols in bamboo extract provide powerful antibacterial activity against a wide range of microorganisms.

Testing at a 5% concentration in standard agar medium confirmed antibacterial and antifungal effects against bacteria and fungi.

No.Test StrainAddition Rate (%)
1 Escherichia coli (Escherichia coli)2.5
2 Bacillus subtilis (Bacillus subtilis)2.5
3 Staphylococcus aureus (Staphylococcus aureus)2.5
4 Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Budding Yeast)2.5
5 Aspergillus niger (Aspergillus niger)5.0

Preservative Effect

Adding the bamboo-derived natural deodorant made it possible to formulate the product without preservatives.

The figure below shows the results of the preservation efficacy test.

The conventional product (red: with preservative) had sufficient preservation efficacy. When formulated without preservatives (blue: preservative-free), its efficacy declined to a level comparable with physiological saline (black). Adding bamboo dry-distillation extract (green: 1.5%) to the preservative-free product provided preservation efficacy equivalent to that of the preservative-containing product.

* The amount required for a preservative-free formulation varies by formulation and may need adjustment.

Deodorizing Effect

Test Samples: ● Bamboo Extract ● Purified Water or Buffer Solution (Control)

Odor Sources: ● Ammonia and Trimethylamine ● Methyl Mercaptan and Hydrogen Sulfide

For the ammonia and trimethylamine deodorization tests, each test sample was placed in a sealed container. After the odor was introduced, its concentration in the container was measured using detector tubes.

For the methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide deodorization tests, bamboo extract diluted with buffer solution was used to prevent the liquid form from slowing the reaction. Each sample was placed in a sealed container, the odor was introduced, and the concentration in the container was measured by GC-FPD.
